Selway River Wilderness Raft Trips
Selway River Reading List
We will have a library on the river containing these and other books about the region, however, you may wish to learn more about the Selway River area prior to the trip:
"Floating The Wild Selway" - West Fork Ranger Station, 6735 West Fork Road, Darby, MT. 59829 - $4 - There is no "how to" map of the Selway River and its rapids, but this one does a good job of orienting you to the river and showing where the rapids are. "The Way to the Western Sea" by David Lavender - Harper Collins, New York, NY This is the best Lewis and Clark book I have ever read. Highly recommended. "Undaunted Courage" by Stephen Ambrose - Simon & Schuster, New York. Another great book focused on Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson and the expedition. "Let Me Be Free" by David Lavender - Harper Collins, New York, NY Good book about the Nez Perce Indians, native to the Selway River area. "I Never Felt Poor Except in Town" by Jean Carroll - In 1932, at the age of two, Jean Renshaw Carroll was packed up with her brother and sister and moved to the Pettibone Ranch on the Selway River. Her parents had bought the place to carve a living in the wilderness, 38 miles from the nearest road. This is a wonderful tale of what it was like for a young woman to come of age among the splendor and hard work of the Selway country. Renshaw Rapid on the river is named for Jean's father, Alvin Renshaw. Order from The Book Shoppe, 227 W. Main, Grangeville, ID 83530. 208-983-1248 "Digging Dinosaurs" by John Horner - Workman Publishing, New York, NY The primary geologic forces that occurred 75 million years ago and created what is now central Idaho also affected large populations of dinosaurs that lived just to the north and east of present day Missoula, Montana. John Horner set the world of paleontology on its ear by discovering the fossilized remains of 10,000 dinosaurs, including nests of eggs and baby dinosaurs. Great reading, written so laymen can understand. We'll have maps and fossils with us on the river. "This Bloody Deed" by Ladd Hamilton - Washington State University Press, Pullman, WA - Our drive to the Selway from Missoula takes us on the Magruder Corridor road along the river. In 1863, Lloyd Magruder, a candidate for Congress from the newly established Idaho Territory, was murdered for his gold on his way back from selling supplies in the mining town of Bannock, Montana. His murderers were hung after the first trial of the new Territorial capitol in Lewiston. This Bloody Deed is a novel about the event. Very good!
